Grollo project takes home prestigious SPASA awards

Every year, the Swimming Pool and Spa Association (SPASA) celebrates excellence in the industry at its Awards of Excellence Gala Dinner. The 2018 awards saw a contractor working on  a Grollo Homes project take out the Victorian State Gold and National Silver awards in the Best Residential Fibreglass, Acrylic or Vinyl-Lined Lap Pool category.

The Awards of Excellence covers a range of categories, including finished pool installations, and are designed to promote achievement in design, construction, innovation and professionalism across the industry; encourage a high degree of competency and professionalism by association members; and provide a means and opportunity for consumers to identify Award winners.

The award winning pool was designed by Grollo Homes and installed by specialist fibreglass pool builders Compass Pools Melbourne.

Considering the design

Ben Grollo, Principal Architect at Grollo Homes, said there were a number of features specified in the design brief that needed to be kept in mind when designing and selecting materials for the award winning pool.

We needed to create a suspended pool that was accessible from the main living area, and decided to use fibreglass for ease of installation and ongoing maintenance.

“An automatic Remco pool cover was also installed to minimise heat loss from the gas heating system and maintain a comfortable temperature all year round.

“This was important for our client as he needs to swim every day to aid an old back injury.

“There were also many structural and waterproofing issues that needed to be resolved and required a lot of detailing to ensure no long-term issues to the surrounding dwelling.”

Reducing condensation

As well as helping to meet the design brief for the pool, these features also help to minimise condensation and mitigate its effects, which is a major consideration when designing and building an indoor pool.

“Excessive moisture in an indoor environment can impact on internal ceiling, wall linings and the structural frame,” Ben said.

“We chose fibreglass for the pool as it is typically easier to maintain and allows for easier chemical balancing. The pool cover also help minimise condensation.

“To prevent excessive condensation on glass, we also installed a specialist environmental heating system, which has the added benefit of allowing for good ventilation.”
